In Metal, how much harder or heavier does metal have to get? I mean
the term metal was used a long time ago but the music that was called
metal then isn't considered metal now. Now there most bands tune down
a half step or drop the E string down to D to make their guitars sound
lower and for lack of a better word, meaner. There are even 7 and 8
string guitars out there now. Metal used to mean loud distorted
guitars with heavy bass and heavy drum sounds with a high pitched
singer/screamer. Now it's even heavier with very low vocals and lots
of screaming and growling. At one time Metalica was considered heavy
but when their music became popular by the general public some people
called them sell outs! I'm sure they were crying all the way to the
bank! Another band, not metal but a band still out there touring and
selling out is Journey. Now not many people know that Journey had
three albums out before they ever had Steve Perry joined the band and
they went more commercial. Their music before was very progressive. It
seems like whenever a bands gets world wide acclaim, some people call
them sell outs! The whole reason to record music is because you love
playing the music but to also be come famous. Being some underground
band that only a few know of is not my Idea of being famous. I've been
playing melodic metal for over 20 years and still do and can hold my
own shred wise. Some people here would say that the underground bands
are the Truly metal bands or black metal bands. Do you think those
bands will have any longevity? Say what you want about other bands but
Journey is still selling out and so it the really old band called the
Rolling Stones. Now maybe it's cause I'm 51 and just maybe not so
pissed off anymore so it's hard for me to see. I still see shows and
went to Oz fest a few times and to be honest, I could remember most of
the opening acts which by the way who's fan were mostly 15 - 18 year
old boys! There was just nothing special about any of them. I like
all types of metal but really, how much heavier does it have to be?
